In August 2025, an internet rumor claimed that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had put $5 million into "Dogtopia," reportedly a therapeutic haven for adopted dogs being built "near Tennessee."

The post linked to an article ( archived ) From August 19, 2025, which included the title: "BREAKING: Pete Hegseth Refers to This Location as 'Dogtopia' – A 37-Acre Healing Sanctuary Funded by His $5 Million Investment_HESU." We contacted the website that posted the article and will update this fact check if we get a reply.

It was not the initial location to assert this. A webpage ( archived ) dated July 8, 2025, repeated the same statement. Nevertheless, both websites presented an incorrect claim. No proof exists that Hegseth contributed $5 million to a canine rescue center. A DuckDuckGo search Searching for the phrase "Hegseth dog sanctuary" shows results from various Facebook posts and websites, but no reputable news organization has verified this statement.

Being a well-known public figure and an important member of Trump's administration, a similar statement from Hegseth—images accompanying the article depicted Hegseth delivering a public declaration while accompanied by a dog—would likely have been reported by reputable media sources.

Instead, the pictures supposedly showing Hegseth were created using artificial intelligence. Apart from the fact that a Google reverse image search did not find any matches, we examined one of these images using AI detection tool Hive, which concluded the images were almost certainly generated by AI.

Interestingly, a well-known business named Dogtopia highlights numerous sites throughout the United States and Canada but it seems unrelated to Hegseth. When we reached out to the company for confirmation, a representative replied, " Thanks for getting in touch to clarify this rumor. This same false claim has appeared before alongside other well-known or notorious individuals in the image. You're right—this information is not accurate.
