Tesla May Be Sued Over Property Valuation Dispute

AUSTIN, Texas - Tesla may face legal action regarding its Gigafactory headquarters following a reduction of over $1 billion in its assessed property value.

This followed the company disputing its valuation and lowering the property's value by over $1 billion.

In July, the Tesla Gigafactory had an initial valuation of $4.6 billion from the Travis Central Appraisal District. The firm challenged this assessment, resulting in a revised amount of $3.4 billion set by the Travis Appraisal Review Board.

Nevin Kamath is part of Resist Austin, an organization that refers to itself as employing peaceful civic protest to achieve a vision where President Donald Trump is out of office.

"They aren't fulfilling their part of the agreement with Travis County. Now they're attempting to avoid paying taxes. It isn't clear to me at this point if they should receive such a tax exemption," stated Kamath.

A panel consisting of property holders from Travis County offers their services to tackle these issues.

However, last week, the TCAD board of directors gave chief appraiser Leana Mann permission to initiate legal action if required to ensure what they consider an equitable valuation.

Mann provided FOX 7 with a statement stating, "The fundamental basis of the property tax structure is that each property owner contributes their just portion of the taxation responsibility. If a ruling from the appraisal review board challenges this principle, the district must be committed to advocating for justice and equality among all Travis County property holders."

"Eventually, I believe this highlights several points. First, that Tesla might not always be the most reliable company when it comes to following the rules, as it could be attempting to manipulate the process," stated Kamath.

Tesla started building the Gigafactory in 2020. The firm is expected to get over $60 million in tax incentives during the next ten years in return for an announced investment of $1.1 billion.

In the meantime, at the beginning of this month, Tesla investors initiated another legal action against the company, alleging that its Robotaxi vehicles were not safe and breached traffic regulations.

TCAD anticipates receiving formal confirmation from the assessment committee shortly regarding the property's ultimate valuation.

After its arrival, they will have 60 days to determine if they should initiate legal action.

"I want Tesla to contribute what they should, regardless of exactly how much that is. And I do have faith in the officially chosen representatives from Travis County to decide on this matter. Therefore, if they believe it's required to proceed with legal action, I would likely back them," Kamath stated.

FOX 7 Austin contacted Tesla for a response, but has not received one yet.
