BOSTON — Immediate responses following the Red Sox (63-51) take a significant advantage early in the first game of a three-match series against the Royals and maintain their dominance to secure their sixth consecutive win with a final result of 8-5:
1) Bailey Falter's first game with the Royals turned into a quick failure. The left-handed pitcher, who was brought over from Pittsburgh in a mid-season deal, quickly proved why he bears his last name. This happened as the Red Sox once again recorded a large inning, scoring five or more runs—marking their 18th such performance of the season.
Romy Gonzalez and Alex Bregman welcomed Falter with base hits, followed by Wilyer Abreu drawing a walk to fill the bases. Then Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run single to start the scoring. Three batters later, Jarren Duran sent a three-run home run into deep center field, making the score 5-0. This significant rally marked another strong inning for the Red Sox, leading them to a win.
Boston has managed to score five or more runs in the opening inning on four different instances this season. The only teams with more such innings are the Cubs and Yankees (19).
2) Duran was outstanding on both offense and defense during the victory. Bello faced ongoing traffic, giving up six hits, issuing a walk, and seeing two more runners reach due to errors. He consistently minimized the harm. Bello got out of a situation with the bases full and one out in the third inning, and later kept Kansas City to a single run in the fourth after a Yastrzemski double placed two players in scoring position without any outs. Overall, Bello recorded five strikeouts over six innings, allowing only an unearned run.
The Boston Red Sox would probably like to see him use caution more frequently. For the time being, however, he keeps managing to get himself out of difficult situations.
