AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) - State Republican officials are working to prevent quorum-busting tactics through a proposed law that restricts legislators from soliciting or using campaign funds when they are not present during the legislative session.
Rep. Matt Shaheen (R), representing Plano, Texas, introduced HB 18. This bill prevents legislators from earning over $221 when disrupting a quorum. This figure represents the daily pay lawmakers receive for attending sessions. Those who violate this rule could be fined as much as $5,000.
Representative Pat Curry of District 56 hopes this measure will stop Democrats from disrupting the quorum once more. He also aims for it to block external interference in matters concerning Texas.

They can't handle your hotel costs and airfare or get you on private jets and take you out of the state. You might still manage it, but you'll have to bear those charges yourself.
Chair of the McLennan County Democratic Party, Mark Hays, stated that the legislation aimed to target Democrats.
Everything comes down to revenge," Hays stated. "The actions taken by the Democrats have always been permitted under the regulations.
Hays mentioned that the legislation might be subject to judicial review.
"If a person from Texas wishes to persuade individuals in different states to back their stance, that is entirely within their rights," Hays stated.
The Congressional Delegation for House Elections conducted the initial review of the legislation on Monday.
