A tour bus heading back from a visit to Niagara Falls flipped over in upstate New York on Friday, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to many more, with some passengers becoming stuck inside or thrown out, according to authorities.
A fatal accident took place on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, close to Buffalo, as reported by the New York State Police.
The bus was heading east when "the vehicle lost control, entered the median, overcorrected, and finally ended up in the ditch," stated New York State Police Trooper James O'Callaghan at a news conference.
State troopers reported on Saturday that the bus had flipped over and slid off I-90 onto the southern slope.
Several individuals were expelled or tossed within the bus as it flipped over, reported Major Andre Ray of the New York State Police Troop T.
Five grown-ups were discovered dead at the location, he stated.
They were confirmed on Saturday as Shankar Kumar Jha, 65, from Madhu Bani, India; Pinki Changrani, 60, from East Brunswick, New Jersey; Xie Hongzhuo, 22, from Beijing, China, who is a student at Columbia University; Zhang Xiaolan, 55, from Jersey City, New Jersey; and Jian Mingli, 56, also from Jersey City, New Jersey.
In a release, Columbia University expressed being "deeply saddened" upon learning about Hongzhuo's passing in the accident.
"The emotionally painful loss is strongly experienced throughout our community," the university stated, noting that support services would be available for any students requiring assistance.

As reported by O'Callaghan, almost all others experienced various injuries such as lacerations, contusions, and scrapes.
Several people were transported to Erie County Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban, and UMMR located in Batavia. Mercy Flight along with many emergency medical services personnel and first aid providers helped at the location, according to authorities.
The reason for the crash remains under examination, although "it is thought the driver became distracted, lost command, made an excessive correction, and ultimately moved onto the right side of the road," Ray mentioned at a news conference on Friday night.
The bus driver — 55-year-old Bin Shao from Flushing, New York — showed no indications of being impaired, and the touring vehicle experienced no mechanical issues, as reported by authorities.
No accusations have been made so far, Ray stated on Friday.
On Friday night, the National Transportation Safety Board announced it is dispatching a "go-team" to examine the fatal accident.
It was first thought that a child had died, but this turned out to be incorrect, according to Ray.
Law enforcement first reported that the accident included a tractor-trailer, but subsequently stated that the bus was the sole vehicle involved.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Several people were injured when a school bus with more than 40 kids aboard crashed on the first day of classes.The bus was heading back to New York City following a trip to Niagara Falls, carrying 54 individuals aboard, including two staff members from the transportation company, as reported by law enforcement. The travelers varied in age between 1 and 74 years old, according to authorities. Many of those onboard were of Indian, Chinese, or Filipino origin, per O'Callaghan.
The driver remained alive and "has been cooperating," according to Ray. The bus company was M & Y Tour, Inc., located in Staten Island, New York, he mentioned.
Twenty-four patients were moved to Erie County Medical Center suffering from head trauma, broken limbs, and additional wounds, according to physicians at the facility, who noted that all individuals are anticipated to make full recovery. As of Saturday, the medical institution reported that ten of these patients had already left the hospital. The American Red Cross facilitated their transportation to a retirement community located in Amherst, New York.
Following an announcement shortly after midday on Sunday, Erie County Medical Center reported that 11 individuals involved in the bus accident were still hospitalized, all in stable condition, with one patient set to leave on Sunday.
Kaleida Health, which manages several hospitals in the region, reported receiving a total of 20 patients, among them five minors. The organization mentioned that one child is still in critical condition.
The University of Rochester Medical Center stated that two of the patients brought in from the accident are receiving treatment for severe injuries. During a Sunday report, the facility mentioned, "Out of the six taken to URMC, one was released yesterday, another was released today, one is still in critical condition, and the remaining three are in stable health."
During the recovery efforts after the crash, New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated she received information about the "heartbreaking tour bus incident."
"My group is collaborating closely with @nyspolice and local authorities who are striving to save and support all those affected," she stated in a statement on X earlier Friday.
Every lane on the highway in Pembroke was shut down following the accident, which took place eastbound on I-90. The westbound lanes have now been opened again.
"Be prepared for significant delays and different transportation paths," stated the New York State Police.
