Elon Musk's highly-anticipated documentary directed by Alex Gibney is set to debut in U.S. theaters through Bleecker Street.
"Elon Musk" offers a sharp examination into the story of the tech mogul. Gibney keeps broadening the movie’s reach to present a detailed depiction, even as events continue to develop live. Bleecker Street plans to release "Musk" in cinemas ahead of its premiere on HBO Max. HBO Documentary Films had previously secured exclusive streaming and television rights for North America, whereas Universal Pictures Content Group obtained global distribution rights.
"Few biographical portraits, aside from well-known political leaders, have focused on someone who stands at such a pivotal point within our society as Elon Musk," stated Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker Street, in a release: "However, there isn't a single filmmaker I can picture telling this story to viewers with greater clarity, boldness, and sense of immediacy than Alex Gibney," Sanderson added.
Gibney once helmed "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley," the Academy Award-nominated film "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," and the Oscar-winning documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side."
"Musk" brings back Gibney along with Sanderson, as well as Bleecker producers Tyler DiNapoli and Myles Bender, who had collaborated before on "We Steal Secrets," the widely praised film about Julian Assange, which was distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International in 2013.
The documentary "Musk" is directed by Gibney, Jessie Deeter, and Erin Edeiken of Jigsaw Productions; Zhang Xin and Joey Marra of Closer Media; Nick Shumaker and Jessica Grimshaw of Anonymous Content; and Dana O'Keefe of Double Agent. Additional executive producers are Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann from New Regency; Richard Perello from Jigsaw; William Horberg from Closer Media; David Levine from Anonymous Content; plus Kent Sanderson and Miranda King representing Bleecker Street.
The agreement was arranged by Miranda King and Avy Eschenasy from Bleecker Street, along with Nick Shumaker from Anonymous Content representing the directors. HBO Documentary Films had earlier secured exclusive North American streaming and television rights, while Black Bear is managing global distribution for the movie and finalized the arrangement with the Universal Pictures Content Group.
Bleecker Street has just reissued the 1984 underground favorite "This Is Spinal Tap," which was developed by Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, and is set to debut Rob Reiner's "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" on September 12.
