The Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney has secured an agreement for his highly anticipated documentary about Elon Musk to screen in American theaters before its release on HBO Max.
HBO Documentary Films and Universal Pictures have partnered with independent distributor Bleecker Street to present the movie—titled merely, Musk - to theaters. The collaborators characterize the movie as "a sharp examination into the myth of Elon Musk, the globe's most celebrated 'innovator-businessman,' whose significant impact shapes the world we all inhabit."
The agreement was announced on Tuesday before the start of the Venice Film Festival in Italy on Wednesday.
Rumors surfaced as early as March 2023 suggesting that Gibney was developing a documentary about Musk, though the project still doesn't have an announced premiere date. HBO and its collaborators indicate that Musk's continued presence in international headlines has complicated efforts to decide when and how to wrap up their biographical account.
The movie keeps expanding in scale as the narrative develops," the companies stated in a shared release, noting that they "will strive to reveal a detailed depiction, even as events occur simultaneously with history.
In March 2023, after a fan shared information about an upcoming documentary, Musk responded with the comment, "It's a biased article."
Gibney subsequently responded directly, stating, " How would you know? "
Known for his detailed examination of high-profile individuals and controversies, Gibney gained recognition in 2005 with "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" and later earned an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2007 for "Taxi to the Dark Side," which explored the U.S. military's practice of indefinite detention and interrogation methods in the Middle East. Additional notable works consist of "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" (which received three Emmy Awards), "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks," and "Citizen K," focusing on Vladimir Putin and Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
States Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker Street: "Few biographical documentaries, aside from well-known politicians, have focused on someone who embodies such a pivotal point in our culture as Elon Musk. However, there isn’t another director I can picture delivering this narrative to viewers with greater insight, boldness, and timeliness than Alex Gibney."
A fresh theater distribution agreement was arranged by Miranda King and Avy Eschenasy from Bleecker Street, with Nick Shumaker representing the directors at Anonymous Content. HBO Documentary Films had earlier secured exclusive North American streaming and television rights, while Black Bear is managing global sales for the movie, having struck the arrangement with the Universal Pictures Content Group.
Musk Produced by Gibney, Jessie Deeter, and Erin Edeiken of Jigsaw Productions; Zhang Xin and Joey Marra of Closer Media; Nick Shumaker and Jessica Grimshaw of Anonymous Content; and Dana O'Keefe of Double Agent. Executive producers consist of Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann from New Regency; Richard Perello from Jigsaw; William Horberg from Closer Media; David Levine from Anonymous Content; along with Kent Sanderson and Miranda King from Bleecker Street. Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker, and key creatives Tyler DiNapoli and Myles Bender from Bleecker previously collaborated with Gibney on We Steal Secrets, the highly praised 2013 documentary focusing on Julian Assange, which was distributed by Focus Features and Universal Pictures International.
