A canine was fatally wounded by law enforcement officials following an incident where it seriously injured a woman in Boston on Monday, according to the city's police department.
Police responded to Howe Terrace in Dorchester shortly after 7:30 p.m. following a call about a dog that was not under control.
Subscribe to Our NewslettersUpon their arrival, the officers tried to divert the dog's attention, but it instead turned towards them. Both officers opened fire, resulting in the dog's death, according to the Boston Police Department.
The victim survived an attack despite suffering significant injury to her arm, according to authorities. Although the officers were not bitten by the dog, they were hospitalized for assessment.
As soon as emergency medical personnel reached the location, authorities stated they could not get close to the woman or provide assistance since the dog kept attacking without stopping.
"Every time we employ any form of force—especially with our equipment—we follow all necessary procedures. We examine the incident as a whole, but once more, there's nothing here that leads me to believe we didn’t do everything possible to properly preserve a life," said Boston Police Department Commissioner Michael Cox.
Cox mentioned that someone has ownership of the dog; nevertheless, he provided no additional details, stating that the inquiry is still in progress.
Michel De La Cruz resides in an apartment building located on Howe Terrace and mentions she experienced a scary encounter with the same dog as well.
He's quite confrontational," she remarked. "One day, I had my car door open and was getting my children into the car seat when he climbed inside and started shouting at them.
Jordan Hurley takes her dog Andy for a stroll through her Dorchester area without encountering any issues.
Recently, none of the dogs have had negative interactions with my dog while we're out for walks," Hurley stated. "I just pray that the person who was attacked is okay; it's definitely sad that things ended up this way.
Law enforcement officials state they are unaware of the dog's owner. The specific breed of the dog has not been revealed.
