WAICAPA (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Mauna, a unique event took place on Monday to honor families who have relocated to a newly established community under the Department of Hawaiian Homelands located in Waicapa.
Pu'uhona features more than 160 residences and parcels spread across nearly 47 acres of land.
The arrival occurs two years following the project's official start.
Interim Governor Sylvia Luke states that this marks the initial development constructed with the $600 million allocated by the legislative body.
Luke stated, "Many of you I can see in your expressions the sorrow and happiness of being present here, of having the opportunity to carry out the responsibility entrusted to us by Prince Kuhio and the obligation the state holds in making sure more homesteaders, more Native Hawaiians, are settled on the land."
Hawaiian Home Lands Department official Kali Watson stated, "For the 161 families in phases 1 and 2, may your homes overflow with aloha, your backyards echo with children’s joy, and your tables always have plenty. May Pu'uhona serve as a site of recovery, perseverance, and power for each one of you."
DHHL mentioned that this marks the beginning of seven upcoming initiatives on Valley Isle.
