Turns out, Adam Sandler wasn't exclusively thinking of one individual when writing a harsh verse targeting an anti-Semitic artist he Saturday Night Live Special song for the 50th anniversary, "50 Years."
In an emotionally charged, humorous, and occasionally sharp song designed to properly honor the show's extensive legacy, Sandler sings at one moment, "50 years of discovering your favorite musician is anti-Semitic."
When asked by Vulture If he had a certain musician in mind while composing the track, Sandler said, "Well, you know, anyone who wants to take that one, it's their choice. I can't specify, because unfortunately, there have been a few."
Sandler might not have been referring to anyone specific, but someone definitely believed it was directed at them. Following the release of the special in February, Ye— the contentious rapper previously known as Kanye West — wrote in a now-deleted tweet Thank you, Adam Sandler, for the love.

The schedule of Ye's postings and the phrase in the SNL Soon after, the song prompted many—including, it appears, Ye—to believe it was about the rapper.
Sandler wrote "50 Years" together with SNL Writer Dan Bulla, who also performed on the keyboard during the anniversary special. The song earned the pair an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
The two managed to include a great deal of history within a single song, but did they feel there was something specific that was left out?

Bulla, who was present with Sandler during the interview, remarked, "That's the main point: In that part, there are a hundred others you might have mentioned. However, we were just sitting there thinking, 'You can't blame yourself for that, or you'll drive yourself insane trying to cover everything.' Still, we were truly aware of everyone featured in various ways across the show and didn't want to feel overly pressured to bring up someone amazing whom we admire if we knew beforehand that they had their own segment and would be recognized later on."
He said, "So we aimed for a solid mix. But, as with every aspect of the show, there are so many talented individuals and an abundance of excellent material. It's impossible to stress over handling everything."
SNL50 a three-hour festive 50th anniversary tribute, broadcasted on February 16. The last episode of SNL The show's 50th season premiered on NBC on May 17.
