The U.S. Space Force has received RTX Corp.'s ( NYSE: RTX ) The ground control network for the military's fleet of GPS satellites, after several years of delays and significant budget increases for a project previously referred to as the Pentagon's "Number One problematic initiative," according to Bloomberg on Thursday.

The next-generation operational control system, referred to as OCX, was handed over on July 1, and is expected to start functioning later this year—nearly nine years behind schedule—if all final tests go well, as stated in the report.

OCX aims to offer access to more secure and interference-resistant software for the military's utilization of the GPS navigation system, which is also employed globally by civilians, while maximizing the benefits of enhanced GPS III satellites being developed by Lockheed Martin.

"The testing and transition activities will keep happening until the system is prepared for operational use, anticipated around late 2025," stated Colonel Stephen Hobbs, who leads the Space Force unit responsible for assessing the system.
