MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW) has made significant progress in upgrading its utility systems by choosing Nokia to implement an extensive private 5G wireless network throughout Memphis and Shelby County.

This effort is included within MLGW's Infrastructure Renewal/Replacement (r2I) strategy and places the utility as the first city-owned power company in the United States to deploy an independent commercial 5G network on a large scale.

The two-part initiative serves as a key component of MLGW's larger Grid Modernization Program, designed to improve system dependability, facilitate instant data exchange, and foster the adoption of cutting-edge solutions.

Deploying the 5G network serves as a key component of MLGW's efforts to modernize the grid," stated Doug McGowen, president and CEO of MLGW. "This will provide swift and dependable connectivity for grid equipment; enhanced resilience during severe weather or cyber incidents, enabling quicker restoration of electricity following disruptions.

McGowen further mentioned that the updated system will create opportunities for supporting upcoming technologies such as electric cars and energy storage solutions.

During stage one, it will create basic coverage, targeting around 93% of Shelby County to assist with essential utility functions.

During stage two, it will broaden its reach, improve network reliability, and introduce sophisticated grid automation, intelligent management systems, and new innovations.

The 5G network will support all three of MLGW's utility departments—electricity, natural gas, and water—allowing for smooth, instant information exchange between systems and minimizing system interruptions.
