Text messaging has its own vocabulary—sometimes quite literally. Although many people understand the fundamentals such as "LOL" and "IDK," a new one has emerged. learn with the language teaching website Preply shows that even experienced texters often find modern abbreviations confusing. To be truthful, although I knew some of these shortcuts, there were several on the list that I wasn't aware of.
A survey conducted by Preply involving over 1,800 individuals from the United States aimed to discover which texting abbreviations Americans struggle with the most and which ones cause frustration. The hardest-to-understand phrase was EMBM, short for "early morning business meeting." Just 3.8% of participants recognized its meaning. AYOR ("at your own risk") and RLRT ("real life retweet") were also challenging for many. If these seem confusing to you, rest assured you're not the only one who finds them unclear.

Strikingly, the research revealed that Millennials demonstrated greater overall knowledge of online abbreviations compared to Generation Z, surpassing them by 1.5%. Regarding Reddit, this site has been criticized for being the most perplexing regarding acronyms, with one in four Americans struggling to understand them. X (previously known as Twitter) and TikTok came next in line. This is understandable; when there’s limited space and quickness is key, abbreviations come naturally. However, that doesn’t imply everyone is proficient with them.
