How did life feel in ancient Egypt during a period of major transformation? While we cannot truly experience what it was like to be an ancient Egyptian, we now have insight into their lives thanks to the sequencing of an entire genome from ancient Egypt for the very first time.
A study recently published in Nature it highlights a revolutionary breakthrough in genetics, made possible by an individual who lived approximately 4,500 to 4,800 years ago during Egypt’s shift from the Early Dynastic Period to the Old Kingdom. This unknown person, whose occupation involved hard labor as a potter, provided scientists with new insights into what it meant to be Egyptian in antiquity through their genome.
Unraveling Ancient Egyptian DNA
It's not precisely secret that ancient Egypt have long been a popular topic of study. Mummies have captured the interest of scientists, such as evolutionary geneticists Svante Pääbo widely recognized within the scientific field for his research regarding the Neanderthal genome.
Indeed, mummies served as Pääbo's entry point into the area of evolutionary genetics four decades ago, when he managed to extract DNA from mummy samples dating back approximately 2,000 years. Fast forward to now, and advancements in DNA technology have significantly progressed, enabling scientists to secure the first complete genome from ancient Egypt.
According to a press statement in the latest research, scientists decoded this genome using DNA obtained from a tooth belonging to a man who was interred in Nuwayrat, a village located approximately 265 kilometers (around 165 miles) south of Cairo. His burial took place in a hillside grave prior to the widespread use of mummification. This could have contributed to the preservation of his genetic material, as chemicals Used in the process of embalming, such as sodium carbonate, can break down DNA.

Genetic Transformation During a Chaotic Period
Using radiocarbon dating, the scientists found that the individual existed during a shift from the Early Dynastic era to the Old Kingdom in Egypt. According to the scholars, the Dynastic Period was a significant phase in ancient Egyptian history marked by conflicts, invasions by outside leaders, and instances of governmental breakdowns.
Scientists believe that these circumstances helped set the stage for alterations in the genetic makeup of Egyptians. Artifacts from that time previously indicated that ancient Egypt engaged in trade and cultural exchange throughout the Fertile Crescent, and the genome of an individual found in Nuwayrat reinforced this theory.
Scientists examined the man's DNA and discovered that much of his heritage came from people who resided in North Africa. Nevertheless, 20% of his background originated from those living in Mesopotamia (near present-day Iraq).
This supports the concept that individuals migrated into Egypt and intermingled with indigenous groups, changing the genetic makeup. However, the scientists mention that additional individual genome sequences would be necessary to completely grasp the diversity of heritage during this era of Egyptian history.
By assembling all the evidence from this person’s DNA, bones, and teeth, we've been able to create a detailed understanding," said lead author Adeline Morez Jacobs, who was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the Francis Crick Institute. "We hope that additional DNA samples from ancient Egypt will help clarify exactly when this migration from Western Asia began.
A Hard-Working Potter
Regarding the man's everyday routine, he probably engaged in pottery making or a related craft involving comparable motions. Marks on his bones, indicators of extended arm positions, along with arthritis in his right foot, imply that he might have remained seated while using a potter's wheel.
Strikingly, he received an elite funeral, as evidenced by the location of his remains inside a big ceramic container. Such a distinction after death was typically reserved for people of high status, yet scholars believe he might have managed to rise socially due to his remarkable talent in his craft.
