A fresh era in the development of electric motors could be beginning, with innovations emerging from the UK. Yasa Motors, which operates in Britain and is part of Mercedes' portfolio, has created an advanced electric motor that establishes a new standard for energy output per unit volume. Although there hasn’t been an announced schedule for manufacturing just yet, it seems likely that this will soon come into play. Mercedes-Benz Electric vehicles will be some of the initial adopters of the innovation.
The figures seem as though they were pulled from a work of science fiction. Yasa states that the electric motor only weighs 13.1 kg (28.8 pounds), but still generates an impressive 738 horsepower—something typically linked to high-performance sports cars. This surpasses the Equipmake HPM-400 motor from Australia, currently recognized as the highest-power-density unit available, which provides 536 horsepower but comes in significantly heavier at 40 kg (88 pounds).

Yasa's latest engine also powers the Dark Matter electric motor presented by Koenigsegg A few years back, they appeared quite heavy. This engine has a mass of 39 kg (86 pounds) and generates 800 horsepower along with 921 pound-feet (1,250 Newton-meters) of torque. It will be introduced in the Gemera, yet the difference in weight indicates a change in the design approach for high-performance electric vehicle parts.
Speaking with Autocar Yasa disclosed that its latest cutting-edge motor doesn’t include rare materials such as cobalt-iron laminations and litz wire. "What we've accomplished isn't merely a statistic — it's an example of scalable, ready-for-production innovation that sets a higher standard for electric motor development. The most thrilling aspect? We're only beginning," stated Tim Woolmer, Yasa's Chief Technology Officer and co-founder.

The latest vehicle unveiled by Yasa Motors is the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept. This model features three axial flux motors, providing over 1,341 horsepower (1,000 kilowatts), and a commercial version is expected to be released shortly. In addition, Yasa provides electric powertrains for Lamborghini, such as those found in the Revuelto and the newly introduced Temerario, which replaces the Huracán.
This configuration features two axial flux motors mounted on the front axle, with each delivering 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts) and 221 pound-feet (300 newton-meters) of torque, and each having a weight of 17.3 kilograms (38 pounds). Notable, yet outperformed by the power-to-weight efficiency of Yasa's newest model.
