Artificial intelligence is set to influence nearly all areas of the worldwide economy and is now beginning to enter California's power network.
The California Independent System Operator which oversees the energy grid for roughly 80% of California and part of Nevada, has recently reached an agreement launch a pilot program which will utilize an artificial intelligence application developed by Open Access Technologies International Inc. designed to enhance the efficiency of the California ISO's operations.
A company based in Minnesota, referred to as OATI, states "as far as we know, this marks the initial case of artificial intelligence aiding actual power grid functions."
The OATI artificial intelligence platform, known as Genie, aims to improve the California ISO's system for managing power outages.
Although many regular utility customers may not be familiar with it, the system operator referred to as CAISO manages numerous scheduled interruptions on transmission lines and generating facilities daily—such as repairs and upkeep of equipment, or "derating" a line to lower power output during conditions like strong winds or extreme heat.
"There are many continuous difficulties that the operators face daily when they plan for handling these power interruptions," said Abhi Thakur, Vice President of Platforms, Visualization, and Analytics at OATI.
Each evening around 6 p.m., grid operators review documents outlining expected power interruptions set to occur the following day—examining elements such as specific terms within the descriptions and assessing how a failed line or transformer could impact electricity distribution. This task is crucial, yet tedious and complex.
With the pilot initiative, the Genie software application will employ generative AI (which utilizes machine learning algorithms trained on extensive data sets) along with agentic AI (platforms created to operate independently and perform tasks with limited human input) to handle most of the tedious responsibilities.
"The AI can gather relevant and significant data, analyze it, and present it to you, allowing you to concentrate solely on the key aspects while minimizing the effort required to sift through irrelevant details," Thakur stated during an interview with the Union-Tribune.
Genie serves as a resource intended to assist the California ISO in handling both scheduled and unexpected transmission grid interruptions—distinct from the local power disruptions faced by everyday consumers.
If the pilot initiative demonstrates effectiveness, there will likely be broader consequences regarding the application of artificial intelligence to enhance operational productivity and minimize the likelihood of unexpected electricity disruptions throughout the grid operator's area of responsibility.
The Genie system can also be utilized to contrast future power interruptions with previous incidents that involved similar machinery, enabling verification checks.
"If there is an inconsistency, the Genie assistant can highlight it in the report," Thakur stated to grid operators.
