New York City Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani appeared poised to secure victory in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor on Tuesday evening, as early vote tallies revealed stronger-than-anticipated backing and an increasing advantage over his opponent, the ex-New York Governor. Andrew Cuomo .

The city-wide polling stations shut down at 9 p.m. EST, after which the vote-counting commenced. Given New York’s use of the ranked-choice voting method, a definitive victor would only emerge on election day if one contender secured more than 50% of the "primary preference" votes—indicating they were selected as first pick by over half of all voters. Should this decisive outcome fail to materialize, the ranked-choice mechanism comes into play, initiating procedures unlikely to produce a winner before July 1st. This delay accounts for the time needed to count the secondary through fifth-place rankings.

When 69% of the reports were in, Mamdani held approximately 44% of the votes, with Cuomo close behind at 35.7%.

The person leading up to the vote on Tuesday was former Governor Cuomo, who entered the race fewer than four years following his resignation as governor amid multiple scandals .

Chasing closely behind him is the polls Mamdani, theDemocratic Socialist known for his adeptness withsocial media and daringprogressive platform, has sparked enthusiasm among young voters and earned backingfrom prominentleft-leaning figures within theparty—such asRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

A total of eleven candidates appeared on the ballot on Tuesday, including the New York City Comptroller. Brad Lander and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams .

The widely talked-about competition, featuring viral moments such as Lander’s arrest At an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and a heated debate debate , still marks just the initial phase toward securing victory in the actual mayoral election. The current mayor of New York City is Eric Adams will participate in the general election this November as an independent candidate, following his indictment On allegations of federal corruption, which were subsequently dropped following reports of pressure exerted by the President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice.

Just before 10 PM Eastern Time, CNN predicted that even though Mamdani was leading, he wouldn’t reach the necessary 50% threshold. As a result, the race would proceed to a ranked-choice voting process, where Mamdani remained in a highly favorable spot.
