NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Zohran Mamdani is at the forefront of the race. Democratic primary election for New York City’s upcoming mayor according to initial findings provided by the Board of Elections.
The outcomes published late Tuesday following the closure of the polls encompass primary vote tallies from early voting, Election Day, and absentee ballots. With 91% of the votes tabulated, Mamdani is leading with 43.5% of the votes.
According to initial counts from the Board of Elections, former Governor Andrew Cuomo trails with 36.4% of the votes. Around 10:30 p.m., Cuomo appeared to concede the election.
" Tonight belongs to Mamdani. He earned this; he was victorious," Cuomo stated.
The race hasn't been officially declared yet. The Board of Elections hasn’t published the outcomes from the ranked-choice elimination stages. Whoever wins Tuesday’s primary will secure the Democratic nomination for the upcoming November election.
On Tuesday evening, Cuomo stated that he reached out to Mamdani to extend congratulations for his successful performance in the early primaries.
Tonight didn’t go as planned for us; it was Assemblyman Mamdani’s evening," Cuomo stated. "I reached out to him and offered my congratulations.
The contest has remained closely contested between Mamdani and the previous frontrunner, who was formerly associated with Cuomo. Initially, Cuomo maintained a significant head start, however, Mamdani rapidly began to narrow the gap according to recent surveys. A PIX11 poll conducted earlier this week indicated the competitiveness of the race. Mamdani winning against Cuomo after ranked-choice voting.
Cost has been a central concern for Mamdani’s run. At 33 years old, he has pledged an array of cost-cutting measures such as complimentary public transportation, comprehensive child care services, and a cap on rents for controlled apartments. His platform has attracted backing from prominent figures like Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Cuomo's campaign has centered around topics such as public safety, housing, and combating antisemitism. He has garnered backing from various political figures, notably including Bill Clinton and Mike Bloomberg.
The victor will go up against Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa And independent contenders Mayor Eric Adams and Jim Walden in November. Cuomo stated he intends to appear on the ballot irrespective of the situation.
On Tuesday, New York residents also cast their votes for important positions such as comptroller and public advocate. Incumbent Public Advocate Jumaane Williams secured the Democratic nomination with 71.2% of the ballots.
Mark Levine, the Manhattan Borough President, initially led in the Democratic primary race for comptroller, followed closely by City Council Member Justin Brannan.
