On Thursday, SpaceX stated that their attempts to recover debris following last week’s Starship explosion have faced obstacles, and they are now seeking assistance from Mexico. The country’s president has suggested the potential for legal actions against the company.
A huge Starship vehicle from SpaceX burst into a spectacular fireball during tests in Texas recently, an incident that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained was due to what he called a "significant malfunction."
The Starship spacecraft seemed to undergo at least two consecutive blasts, illuminating the evening sky and scattering wreckage, as seen in videos documenting the instant of its detonation.
"Although SpaceX has tried to retrieve the debris associated with the anomaly, which remains the rightful property of SpaceX, their efforts have been impeded by unauthorized individuals entering private land without permission," the company stated in a social media platform X post.
"The organization stated that they have sought support from both local and federal authorities within the Mexican government for the recovery process," and added that they have also extended their own resources and aid for the cleanup efforts.
On Wednesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government is examining the safety and environmental consequences associated with rocket launches, especially within Mexico’s Tamaulipas region.
A comprehensive review is underway to identify which international laws are being breached. "Following this, we will initiate a process since contamination has been confirmed," Sheinbaum stated at an early-morning press briefing.
A Starship spaceship burst into flames shortly after launching from Texas in March, leading the FAA to suspend aviation activities across portions of Florida. This incident was a significant obstacle for Musk’s interplanetary rocket initiative.
In January, a Starship rocket disintegrated in space just moments after lifting off from Texas, scattering debris across Caribbean islands and resulting in slight damage to a vehicle in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
