SEOUL, June 25 (Yonhap) -- South Korean retailers saw their offline sales increase for the first time in fourth months in May, driven by strong demand for high-value products, data showed Wednesday.

Last month, revenue of major offline retail companies rose 0.9 percent from a year earlier, snapping a three-month streak of on-year declines, while sales from major online platforms climbed 13 percent, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The total income from both brick-and-mortar stores and online sellers grew by 7% compared to the previous year.

The ministry linked the increase in brick-and-mortar sales to elevated customer prices along with strong demand for costly products.

In the non-digital market segment, revenues from high-end products like jewelry and timepieces increased by 8.1% compared to the previous year. However, sales of household appliances and clothing decreased by 7.8% and 3.7%, respectively.

Within the digital realm, sales for food delivery, e-commerce vouchers, and travel-associated services surged by 37.3 percent, whereas income from grocery delivery platforms increased by 18.2 percent.
