Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York State, seems to have lost to Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary in New York City. This represents a significant upset for an experienced politician who had emphasized his support among Jewish voters and his credentials as a supporter of Israel amid opposition from someone advocating anti-Zionism.
As 91% of the votes have been tallied, Mamdani has taken an over 7-point lead ahead of Cuomo.
"Tonight didn’t go as planned for us; it was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night," Cuomo says to his supporters.
"I want to commend the assemblyman for running an exceptionally intelligent, beneficial, and influential campaign. This evening belongs to him. He truly deserves this victory. He won," remarks Cuomo.
Mamdani hasn’t officially claimed victory yet. The city utilizes a ranked-choice voting method where electors may pick as many as five candidates. Should no contender secure more than half of the initial preference ballots, those with the fewest votes get excluded round after round, redistributing their supporters’ subsequent picks until one aspirant attains an outright majority.
The initial tally reflects only the primary choices of the voters. As no contender secured more than half of the votes, this round of counting will proceed, with the definitive outcomes anticipated for the upcoming week.
Even with the ranked-choice voting process, Cuomo seems to have accepted his defeat. He mentioned that he reached out to Mamdani to extend his congratulations.
The third-place contender is Brad Lander, the Jewish progressive serving as New York City Comptroller, who also endorsed Mamdani. Given this endorsement crossover, it seems improbable that Cuomo would have a clear route to victory under the ranked-choice voting system.
In most cases, the victor of the general election emerges from the primary in this predominantly Democratic municipality. Cuomo has enrolled to contest the general election as an independent candidate in November.
A representative for Cuomo states that he is examining the statistics and contemplating his choices for the upcoming November period.
