WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (KAIT) -- The local police force is broadening its patrol operations with some fresh transportation options.
The Walnut Ridge Police Department has acquired an electric bike for their use.
Using the Recon Police Interceptor Bike, Walnut Ridge Police Chief Jamie Ferrell mentioned that the concept originated with Mayor Charles Snapp. After conducting some investigations into it, the city opted to buy one.
Ferrell mentioned that this initiative will aid in monitoring the narrower sections of the city, including alleys, small residential areas, and also aim to make police officers more accessible to the community.
“It will allow us to get these quieter and more efficiently and allow us to do more proactive patrols,” Ferrell said.
Residents such as Chelsea Mitchell believe it is a positive notion.
"We have a hiking path that runs from Walnut Creek all the way to Hoxie, and I believe it would be beneficial to increase patrol presence in this region, particularly around the park," Mitchell stated.
"We have numerous neighborhoods with cul-de-sacs, and I believe these areas would be easier to access using bikes rather than standard patrol cars," Mitchell stated.
Ferrell mentioned that it won't restrict officers from carrying out their usual tasks.
If faced with an arrest or a chase, the officer would call for reinforcement over the radio.
“Ultimately, we aim to deploy more than a single officer for this purpose. Once ready, we’ll assign a specific officer to manage it, along with having our regular patrol officers conducting routine rounds,” Ferrell stated. “Regarding issuing tickets or similar tasks, the vehicle will be equipped with all necessary features such as lights and so forth.”
Ferrell has been trying out the bike and mentioned that he’s already experienced some interactions with it.
He mentioned that the bike faces no restrictions when it comes to terrain and can assist in handling various utility vehicles.
"They gain an advantage since they can navigate throughyards easily, reaching locations where standard police vehicles cannot, thus leveling the playing field," Ferrell explained.
The bicycle features an electric motor with a range of approximately 60 miles, and it includes pedals as well. This makes it suitable for occasions such as the Beatles at the Ridge event.
"The primary issue I see revolves around officer safety; although they might be more vulnerable, I believe our excellent community environment mitigates this risk," Mitchell stated.
The police force has deployed the bicycle on the streets for two evenings now, and according to Chief Ferrell, it has already demonstrated positive outcomes and is considered an excellent enhancement.
