BANGOR, Maine (WABI) -- Northern Light Cancer Care marked the beginning of a new phase of patient care with their celebration at the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute in Brewer.
On Friday, the ceremony took place to inaugurate the facility's third linear accelerator.
This serves as a substitute for a dated device that has frequently malfunctioned, leading to holdups in treatments.
The cutting-edge device offers more precise and prompt radiation treatment for patients.
Medical professionals indicate that the technology significantly impacts patients and personnel utilizing the gear daily.
Radiation oncology often requires patients to visit every day for as long as 30 consecutive days," noted Ava Collins, president of Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. "Therefore, it's crucial that we provide easy patient access, ensure convenience and efficiency in scheduling, and offer strong support throughout their treatment.
"When patients receive treatment using a linear accelerator, they lie on a rigid, flat, rather uncomfortable table—designed specifically for this purpose. The faster we complete their session, the more comfortable it will be for them," explained Dr. William Castrucci, a specialist in radiation therapy.
The innovative technology was enabled through a bequest of $12 million from John Marshall Webber to the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center following his passing.
