(NEXSTAR) — In reaction to calls from patrons urging others to avoid their outlets due to changes in policies, McDonald’s has released an official statement addressing the situation. previous DEI initiatives, In addition to various critiques raised by an activist organization called The People’s Union USA.
The boycott, also referred to as an "economic blackout" by its organizers, will take place from June 24-30. According to founder John Schwarz of the People’s Union USA, one reason for focusing on McDonald’s is their alleged "empty DEI commitments." on social media.

Schwarz additionally charged McDonald’s with taking advantage of tax loopholes and backing politicians who "endanger democracy," along with several other accusations.
On Tuesday, a representative from McDonald’s addressed the calls for an "economic shutdown" initiated by The People’s Union USA.
"As a brand that caters to millions daily, McDonald's welcomes everybody through our doors, and we remain dedicated to inclusivity," the company stated.
McDonald’s also stated that their corporation "brings in billions of dollars in federal, state, and local taxes each year, and we will keep paying our fair share."
We value open conversations with the communities we support; however, we're disheartened by these inaccurate statements that misrepresented our principles and distorted what we've done," McDonald's stated. "We continue to concentrate on catering to our customers and communities. We remain committed and prepared to do so.
Schwarz, in a video Posted on Tuesday, seemed to disregard those ideas.
This isn't about fast food. It's about the strength of the populace," Schwarz stated. "It's about conveying a message to those companies who believe they can exploit prices, dodge taxes, and perpetuate inequalities—corporations that feign support for the public without actually contributing anything meaningful.
McDonald's has reversed some of its pledges toward its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. in January, The Associated Press reported that ending initiatives which aimed to boost diversity among leaders or prompted suppliers to initiate diversity training was part of their actions.
At the time, McDonald’s had pointed to a “shifting legal landscape” after the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling that universities could not consider race during the admissions processes.
Jourdan Nunn, an executive at McDonald’s, stated earlier this month during a human resources conference in Chicago that, contrary to recent developments, inclusion efforts at McDonald’s have remained fundamentally the same "at their essence" even as the corporation has retreated from diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Besides targeting McDonald's, the People’s Union USA has also aimed similar campaigns at economic boycotts involving firms like Amazon, Walmart, Nestle, and General Mills.
