Many featured rotor blades that folded back similar to wings, while others appeared as enhanced versions of high-end drones. The term "Advanced Air Mobility" dominated conversations, and attendees were clearly captivated by what they witnessed.
In times past, electric Vertical Take-off and Landing vehicles existed only within the realms of animation and tech enthusiasts' imaginations. However, this year brought them into reality. Manufacturers showcased significant orders, prominent supporters, and an impression that we moved beyond mere demonstrations.
Eve Air Mobility, a division of Embraer, has entered into a $250 million binding deal with Revo for as many as 50 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. According to Johann Bordais, the chief executive officer at Eve Air Mobility, "Transitioning from theory to execution allows us to progress our business strategy while contributing to the development of a strong and eco-friendly urban air mobility system, thereby establishing an international standard for deploying eVTOL technology."
It could very well be the case. The demand is clear. Airports are overwhelmed, urban streets are congested, and individuals seek a faster means to travel within their city or to nearby cities. Over 800 design concepts are competing for a share of this market, with numerous prototypes having secured customer commitments.
This made Le Bourget feel more akin to a showcase for flying cars rather than your typical airshow. Companies such as Joby Aviation and Lilium presented aircraft that seemed plucked right out of a Marvel movie scene. Major corporations including Airbus and Embraer also revealed their visions for electrified transportation, suggesting future flights where conventional taxis and helicopters would appear outdated.
JoeBen Bevirt, the founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, highlighted the importance of international collaboration, stating: "This achievement today firmly supports our strategy for introducing our aircraft to markets globally. We commend these regulatory bodies for working together towards a unified method for certifying eVTOLs within their individual nations."
Everyone was buzzing about going green. Owing to ultra-lightweight materials, advanced batteries, and innovative airflow designs, these aircraft aim to consume energy as efficiently as fuel-sipping vehicles and maintain near-silent operation.
The approval of the public is also crucial, and it seems the developers understand this. Numerous discussions centered around trial routes designed to transport medical professionals and supplies, as well as brief trips to airports. This was all aimed at showcasing practical applications beyond just looking good in showrooms.
EHang, a trailblazer in Chinese urban air mobility, showcased its autonomous aerial vehicle, the EH216-S, and emphasized their leading position: "We are the first firm to receive both the type certification and the air operator certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This enables us to offer commercial passenger transportation—and we have already begun doing so," stated Ricardo Ortega Recio, an EHang director.
Archer Aviation demonstrated its Midnight eVTOL and also detailed its objectives: "Our eVTOL design aims to offer a secure, eco-friendly, and efficient means of transport for travelers," stated an Archer representative.
The cargo-oriented branch of Textron Systems, Pipistrel, showcased their hybrid aircraft called the Nuuva V300. According to Kyria Shortt, who serves as both the president and CEO of Textron eAviation, "This vehicle was designed with a hybrid approach from the start." She explained further, noting that they use eight electric engines specifically for vertical lift-offs and landings, along with a conventional fuel-powered engine for horizontal flights. This dual-engine system allows them to achieve sufficient range and carrying capacity needed to reach isolated areas effectively.
Newcomers such as Wisk Aero also kept their sights set on the airspace above. "Our aim is to adhere to the same stringent safety protocols used by modern commercial planes, and we're nearing our maiden flight," stated Sebastien Vigneron, CEO at Wisk.
Even humanitarian logistics are on the radar. Windracers announced a collaboration with Aviation Sans Frontières to deliver aid across difficult terrain. “We developed ULTRA with this exact idea in mind,” said Stephen Wright, founder and group executive chairman of Windracers. “To provide low-cost means of delivering humanitarian aid to hard-to-reach locations for people who need help the most.”
There is already significant mainstream attention. Attendees at the exhibition discussed crowded subway systems such as those found in Lagos and Cape Town, highlighting how accelerating urban transit could be more crucial in these cities compared to many major European capital cities. The majority concurred that implementing aerial transportation would necessitate training programs, construction of vertical landing sites known as vertiports, and developing specialized skills among maintenance personnel to ensure these aircraft remain operational.
Certainly, this transformation is happening now. Regulatory bodies are closely collaborating with producers to guarantee these innovations adhere to strict safety criteria. Local populations are being included in discussions to seamlessly incorporate vertiports within cityscapes. The atmosphere at Le Bourget indicated a unified dedication to realizing this aspiration, aiming to make Advanced Air Mobility as commonplace as hailing an Uber ride.
