ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 )— The contest for the Democratic primary in the Albany mayor’s race was packed with candidates. Incumbent Mayor Kathy Sheehan has decided against seeking another term, leaving four Democrats vying for the nomination. Albany City Auditor Dorcey Applyrs was leading Tuesday night.
By late Tuesday, Applyrs led with 54 percent of the votes. She was out front of the local technology firm CEO. Dan Cerutti Albany City Hall President Corey Ellis , and an Albany County Legislator Carolyn McLaughlin .
Cerutti acknowledged defeat in the election during a speech to his supporters on Tuesday evening.
Previously, Applyrs informed NEWS10 that her main focuses would be affordability, economic growth, and public safety. If she secures victory in the general election this November, she will become Albany’s inaugural Black mayor.
I feel incredibly honored that the people of Albany came out to support and believe in my vision, in my leadership, and in my campaign," she stated during her primary night celebration. "Together, we are not only making history but also shaping the future of our wonderful city.
The early voting period for the general election begins on October 25th.
