FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now — Polling stations are scheduled to open for early voting in the special election to replace the recently deceased Representative Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who represented Virginia's 11th Congressional District.
Connolly, who was 75 years old, passed away on May 21. This occurred shortly after he declared his resignation from his role. Connolly revealed that his esophageal cancer had recurred, and he had been fighting the disease since the previous year’s end.
Numerous contenders are competing for the vacant position; however, prior to the election, both the Democratic and Republican parties will conduct their own nomination processes.
Republican nominees:

- Stewart Whitson
- Sam Wong
Democratic nominees:
- Candice Bennett
- Ross William Branstetter, IV
- Dan Lee

- Stella Pekarsky
- James Walkinshaw
- Irene Shin
- Amy Roma
- Priya Punnoose
Independent nominees:
- Chandra Tamirisa
On the initial day of early voting for Democrats, the temperature felt as though it was over 100 degrees. Nonetheless, voters informed DC News Now that this didn’t deter them from submitting their votes.
“As crucial as it gets,” Margie Wheedleton stated. “If we abstain from voting, we lose our privilege to complain.”
Participants from both political affiliations face multiple options among the candidate lists.
Donna Buffington stated that what shaped her decision was identifying which candidate had the strongest capability to counteract the Trump administration.
Any tool that can aid in bringing democracy to us," she stated. "To oppose our present government and demonstrate that they are on the incorrect side of history.
