A remark made by Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell stating that individuals would "move past" suggested reductions in Medicaid sparked significant backlash on social media Wednesday evening, notably from members of the Democratic party.
McConnell was speaking During a private luncheon with Republican senators on Tuesday, he stated, "Many of us are getting feedback from our constituents regarding Medicaid. However, they will eventually come around," according to Punchbowl News.
McConnell's team released a statement afterward, indicating that he was referring to individuals who misuse Medicaid—able-bodied citizens who ought to have jobs—and emphasized the necessity of resisting Democratic fearmongering regarding Medicaid reform.
Senator McConnell encouraged his colleagues to emphasize this point to their constituents and stress that everyone should oppose waste, fraud, and abuse. Additionally, they should strive to safeguard our rural hospitals and ensure support systems are available for those who require assistance.
The Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, responded Regarding McConnell's statement on his individual page on the social media site X.
"Medicaid reductions will result in 16 million Americans losing their healthcare coverage, cause rural hospitals to shut down—making individuals travel for hours merely to consult with their physician—and reduce support for long-term senior care," Beshear stated. "Senator McConnell, our constituents won’t simply 'move past this.'”

Lexington Democratic supporter Cherlynn Stevenson, who is racing for the 6th Congressional District position currently held by Rep. Andy Barr, referred to McConnell's remark as "out of touch."
