According to civil engineering assessments, the subterranean location of the facility, shielded by dense layers of rock and soil, offers substantial defense against both military attacks and earthquakes—provided the chambers and passageways can withstand ground shifts and potential avalanches. However, the surface-level components likely housing crucial systems like heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electricity remain vulnerable; yet their backup features and strategic positioning around core operational zones mitigate significant threats.

The resilience of Fordow is precisely why it remains a focal point of global concerns. Originally constructed as a military site for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the facility later evolved into a nuclear installation—a revelation made by Iran only after Western intelligence agencies had uncovered its existence. Ever since, this location has played a central role in diplomatic talks, inspection processes, and more recent military considerations. According to reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Fordow stands out uniquely among Iranian facilities due to trace amounts of highly-enriched uranium—nearly reaching weapon-level purity at 83.7%—which underscores both its technological sophistication and strategic importance.

Recently, the possibility of a military assault on Fordow has loomed over Iran. This situation places the United States as the sole nation possessing the potential aerial capability to jeopardize Fordow’s security. The Massive Ordinance Penetrator (MOP), weighing 14 tons and crafted for penetrating bunkers, is engineered to breach up to 60 meters of solid rock and fortified concrete. However, according to a recent study published by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and comments made by strategic experts like Cedric Leighton, even this formidable weapon may fall short against Fordow’s core defenses. "The GBU-57/A might still necessitate several strikes on the exact target spot to stand a decent chance of breaching the site," stated the analysis. Delivering the MOP requires the use of America's B-2 stealth bombers, an action laden with significant geopolitical ramifications. In his own words, President Trump declared, “In about two weeks’ time I’ll decide whether or not we’re going ahead,” taking into account both the technological feasibility along with the broader diplomatic repercussions and risks associated with regional tensions.

For Israel, the calculation is straightforward. Without access to the Massive Ordinance Penetrator (MOP) or the strategic bombers required to deploy it, taking direct action against Fordow isn’t feasible. Israeli authorities have publicly acknowledged this limitation; as Ambassador Yechiel Leiter stated, "To eliminate Fordow using a bomb dropped from above, the sole nation possessing such a weapon remains the United States. Thus, it falls upon them to decide whether they will undertake that mission." Alternative strategies—such as attacking entrance tunnels, ventilation shafts, or power supplies—could disrupt activities at the facility. However, these methods wouldn't fully incapacitate the uranium-enrichment capabilities entrenched deep inside the mountainside.

The engineering efforts put into constructing Fordow showcase more than just advanced technical prowess; they also mirror a strategic mindset developed through years of external threats. Iran opted to build its most critical nuclear facilities far beneath the surface with the explicit aim of ensuring their resilience against both military strikes and natural disasters, as recent events have demonstrated.
