Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has launched QwenVLo, its latest multifunctional AI model, as the company strengthens its position amid increasing competition in the international AI arena.

The model allows users To generate and modify images using textual descriptions and visual data, features designed to match or potentially outperform prominent AI companies such as OpenAI and DeepSeek.

QwenVLo represents an enhancement over Alibaba’s earlier model. Qwen2. 5-VL baseline refines and expands it to accommodate new functions like generating images from text and converting one image into another.

A notable characteristic is the progressive generation feature, allowing users to watch an image develop over time—offering a degree of transparency and interaction uncommon among current AI tools.

"The firm stated in a blog post that this enhanced version not only 'comprehends' the world but can also create high-quality reproductions grounded in that comprehension," they explained.

The company clarified that users have the ability to create an image by submitting a request, for example, producing a picture of an adorable kitten. Alternatively, they can alter an existing image by uploading a photograph of a cat and asking for specific modifications, such as placing a hat on the feline’s head.

Alibaba refines AI strategy with Qwen lineup

The drive towards AI is not just about enhancing Alibaba’s e-commerce leadership anymore. Since early 2024, the company has been making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence.

In February, Alibaba’s CEO Eddie Wu stated that the massive e-commerce and IT company would focus its efforts primarily on artificial general intelligence He emphasized that developing AGI has now taken precedence as Alibaba’s primary focus, underscoring the increasing importance of artificial intelligence for the company’s expansion and its strategic advantage moving forward.

Alibaba has introduced various versions of the Qwen series, designed for different types of content: text, images, videos, and audio. The new model, QwenVLo, is specifically engineered to function effectively on less powerful devices such as smartphones and personal laptops. This stands out because many advanced AI models typically require substantial cloud resources to operate smoothly.

In March 2025, Quark launched a fresh version of their app, featuring the introduction of Qwen capabilities. The updated application functions as an intelligent aide powered by artificial intelligence, offering features such as searching, summarizing, and generating content creatively. This move reflects Alibaba's ambition to develop advanced AI models and integrate them into user-friendly applications.

Alibaba competes with DeepSeek and OpenAI in the artificial intelligence competition.

The launch of QwenVLo by Alibaba aligns with a global surge in AI-driven projects. OpenAI, an organization based in the U.S., has introduced GPT-4o, their latest multifunctional model capable of processing and generating responses using text, images, and audio.

In China, everyone was watching DeepSeek, a local startup where cost-efficiency has become an essential factor for success in artificial intelligence research. The company asserted that they had developed a significant rival language model at a fraction of the usual costs, claiming it only set them back a few million dollars.

Technology giants across China have quickly released comparable AI offerings that are quicker, less expensive, and more adaptable. Among these early contenders is Alibaba’s Qwen Vlo, which aims to compete with both Western and Chinese rivals by providing top-notch, lightweight multi-modal capabilities.

The focus of the competition has shifted from developing the most intelligent model to making that intelligence practical and scalable for widespread use.

Alibaba is counting on daily app users such as students, designers, entrepreneurs, and software developers being attracted to tools that are fast, easy to use, and well-suited for different devices.

Yet, it remains to be seen if Qwen VLo will attract prominent users in the market. Nonetheless, Alibaba has made its point clear: China isn’t merely matching the global community’s progress toward AI dominance; it aims to take the leading role.
