In a fresh international listing of top educational institutions worldwide, four universities from the Dallas-Fort Worth area have distinguished themselves by securing places among the elite.
The University of Texas in Dallas , University of North Texas , Southern Methodist University , and University of Texas at Arlington are part of the top 1,200 institutions included in the QS World University Rankings for 2026 . An additional eight schools throughout Texas appear on the roster.
QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a London-based organization specializing in higher education data and analytics, produces this esteemed ranking annually; the 2026 version encompasses over 1,500 institutions globally.
The criteria for ranking the institutions encompass academic reputation; employer reputation; teacher-to-student ratio; faculty research efforts; as well as international student body, researchers, and educators.
In Texas, the University of Texas at Austin ranks first within the state, twentieth nationally, and sixty-eighth internationally.
In rankings of Dallas-Fort Worth area institutions, UTD leads with a national position of No. 85 and a global standing of No. 597. This is succeeded by UNT, placed at No. 123 domestically and between No. 901 and 950 internationally; as well as SMU and UTA, which surprisingly share the same rank of No. 136 nationally and fall within the range of No. 1,001 to 1,200 globally.
These institutions have maintained their upward trajectory in regional, national, and international rankings over the past year. In April, they successfully claimed positions in various listings. Overall, 192 U.S. universities were included in the 2026 QS World University Rankings—the highest number from any nation. At the top of this international ranking stands the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“The results show that while U.S. higher education remains the global leader, its dominance is increasingly challenged by fast-rising emerging systems,” says the QS World University Rankings report. “A decade ago, 32 American universities [were] featured in the world’s top 100; today, that number has dropped to 26, and only 11 of these institutions have improved their position this year."
The 12 institutions of higher learning in Texas featured in the QS World University Rankings for 2026 are:
· University of Texas at Austin, ranked 20th nationally and 68th globally (dropping two places from last year’s global ranking of 66).
• Rice University, ranked 29th nationally and 119th globally (an improvement from 141st worldwide previously).
· Texas A&M University, ranked at No. 32 in the U.S. and No. 144 globally (a drop from No. 154 previously).
· University of Houston, ranked at No. 80 in the U.S. and No. 556 globally (an improvement from 651-660 previously).
・ University of Texas at Dallas, No. 85 in the U.S. and No. 597 in the world (down from 596 last year).
• Texas Tech University, ranked at No. 104 in the U.S. and holding steady at No. 731-740 globally (as was the case last year).
・ The University of North Texas ranks at No. 123 nationally and between No. 901-950 globally (an improvement from 1,001-1,200 previously).
· Baylor University, ranked jointly as No. 136 in the U.S., remains unchanged at between No. 1,001 and 1,200 globally compared to the previous year.
・ Southern Methodist University ranks tied for No. 136 in the U.S., and remains between positions 1,001 and 1,200 globally, unchanged from the previous year.
・ The University of Texas at Arlington ranks joint 136th in the U.S., and remains between positions 1,001 and 1,200 globally, maintaining its standing from the previous year.
· The University of Texas at San Antonio ranks tied for No. 136 nationally in the U.S., and falls within the 1,001-1,200 range globally (no change from the previous year).
· University of Texas at El Paso, ranked No. 172 in the U.S., has moved down to the 1,201-1,400 range globally (from 1,001-1,200 previously).
