Pinterest Unveils AI-Enhanced Visual Search: Discover More Easily Than Ever

Pinterest is improving its image search feature. A collection of new features aimed at enhancing the accuracy and accessibility of image-based searches has been introduced.

On Monday, the firm announced the launch of new features designed to enhance image-based searches as opposed to text ones. This improvement enables users to better filter and define their search outcomes, thus integrating visual search more deeply into the Pinterest platform.

Pinterest hopes these additions will help the platform stand out as a search engine for things that are often hard to describe with words—such as a particular vibe, style, or aesthetic.

Identifying What Users Like About Pins

One of the new features is focused on better understanding what users like about a particular Pin. Initially available in the women’s fashion category in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., this enhancement will display an animated glow when users tap on a Pin. Pinterest will then generate descriptive words to help users pinpoint exactly why they like that specific item. This is powered by visual language models (VLMs), a form of generative AI.

This update mirrors Google’s multimodal search, which combines text and images in a single query. However, Pinterest’s version generates descriptive words that help users refine and improve their search queries. While the company claims it’s using “industry-leading” multimode embedding models, it has not revealed specific details about which models are being used.

Refining Fashion Searches

Pinterest is enhancing its fashion search features as well. Now, users have the ability to look for substitute items displayed in various hues, designs, or materials. For instance, Pinterest could propose a piece with a Y2K vibe, or assist users in finding an analogous blazer that would be more suitable for dressier events.

Moreover, Pinterest plans to roll out the visual search function into additional sections within its application. In the near future, users will have the ability to perform a visual search simply by holding down on any Pin they see in their Home Feed, thereby increasing the usability of this feature.

The update follows closely after Pinterest declared it would start labeling AI-generated images And provide users with the choice to cap the quantity of AI-created images displayed in their feed, responding to user concerns about AI imagery dominating the platform. This adjustment aligns with Pinterest’s aim to sustain its position as an authentic visual shopping destination—where genuine, motivational photos keep influencing purchasing choices instead of being eclipsed by computer-generated visuals.

Pinterest aims to maintain its attractiveness as a visual shopping destination by enhancing its image search capabilities and clarifying how its artificial intelligence tools function. This approach ensures that AI improves the user experience without overwhelming it.
