A 32-year-old man from Venezuela allegedly made a wrong turn onto the Ambassador Bridge in January, inadvertently entering Canada during a delivery run. Since then, he has been detained and deported to El Salvador.
As reported by the New York Times As initially reported by the news outlet, Ricardo Prada Vásquez was arrested on January 15 when he tried to cross back into the U.S. via the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and subsequently handed over to U.S. officials.
"We’re worried that another misstep at the border should not result in our neighbors vanishing,” stated Christine Sauve, who works as the policy engagement and communications manager at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security took action. confirmed on social media That Vasquez was dispatched to El Salvador on March 15 and refuted the New York Times’ claim that he wasn’t included in the list of individuals sent to a prison there. The agency asserts he was part of a criminal group known as Tren de Aragua and gained entry into the U.S. through the port of entry in Brownsville, Texas, on November 29, 2024.
Experts in immigration rights, such as Sauve, express their worries regarding this case and similar instances where individuals are being deported without proper legal procedures.
"We have witnessed prolonged incarcerations that should not occur, and there’s lacking supervision or an entity to address and probe such issues. Every individual within the United States, irrespective of their immigration standing, possesses the right to due process, no matter who they are or where they come from," she stated.
The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib are scheduled to conduct a press briefing at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday regarding the detention and disappearance of immigrants under U.S.-Canada border control.
