The Vice President, JD Vance, stated that he might contest the presidency in 2028.

However, the vice president stated that he would need to take one step initially: discuss it with President Donald Trump.

"When we reach that stage, I'll speak with the president, and we'll determine our course of action. However, my view is that if we perform well, the political aspects will resolve on their own," Vance stated during an "Fox & Friends" interview quoted by the New York Post.

The vice president stated, "There's an abundance of tasks at hand, and I seldom dwell on what might occur in three and a half years."

Earlier this year, Trump chose not to support Vance as his successor.

In a pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News’s Bret Baier, Trump was questioned about whether he viewed Vance as the potential GOP nominee for 2028.

"No, but he is highly competent," Trump responded.

I believe you have an impressive team with many skilled individuals. Up until now, I think he has been performing exceptionally well," the president stated. "It's still quite early; we've only just begun.

Vance subsequently dismissed Trump’s lack of endorsement.

"I believe he articulated precisely what needed to be expressed, stating 'It's still too soon,' " Vance commented, also mentioning that his attention is elsewhere rather than on political matters.

He stated, "Certainly, there will come a time to concentrate on political matters, such as the upcoming midterm elections. ... Let's first ensure we perform well, and subsequently address the midterms. Later on, we'll tackle presidential politics when the right moment arrives."

Republican associates close to Vance informed The Post that he is considered a strong contender for the GOP nomination, though his position will largely depend on how well he serves as the treasurer for the Republican National Committee during the 2026 midterm elections.

Betting sites have designated Vance as the leading contender for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination.

However, Trump has also discussed candidly his intention to run for a third term should he manage to bypass the constitutional restrictions.

The 22nd Amendment says that nobody can be elected president more than two times. Trump has already been elected twice, in 2016 and in 2024.
