WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, who serve on the Senate Budget Committee, issued a joint statement following the Republican senators' vote early Saturday morning approving a budget resolution.
The Senate passed the bill with a vote of 51-48 following an extensive sequence of amendment votes, keeping senators circulating within the chamber for several hours.
Senators Rand Paul from Kentucky and Susan Collins from Maine were the sole Republicans to oppose the measure.
Kaine and Warner issued a shared statement condemning the resolution, stating that it impacts initiatives Virginia residents depend on.
The Trump administration has unnecessarily plunged our economy into turmoil through the implementation of across-the-board tariffs, which will increase expenses. Despite our firm objections, Republican lawmakers in Congress have proceeded with a substantial tax overhaul that slashes vital programs relied upon by Virginians, grants hefty tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy, and escalates the national debt to record-breaking heights. Our priorities ought to include reducing childcare and housing costs, offering tax relief to middle-class citizens, and building on efforts to enhance domestic manufacturing. The fiscal and economic strategies pursued by President Trump and his fellow Republicans pose a significant threat to our nation’s well-being, and we strongly advise them to change direction before causing further damage.
Warner and Kaine addressed the Senate floor to oppose the resolution. Additionally, they mentioned that they submitted amendments aimed at safeguarding federal workers, veterans, and Virginians enrolled in Medicaid; however, these amendments did not get included in the final version of the resolution.
