The United States might introduce fresh sanctions against Russia to compel it to stop fighting. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine reported that Washington is nearing this decision at a press conference.

He observed that even though a bill regarding sanctions hasn't been submitted to Congress yet, "suitable stringent actions will be implemented shortly." The President stated that Ukraine anticipates enhanced pressure on Russia from the United States.

“Increasing penalties for the Russians due to their persistence in continuing the conflict represents the initial move towards achieving a truce. We anticipate these measures being implemented. My understanding is that America is nearing decisive action. Time will tell if this comes to fruition. Let me clarify, this isn’t speculation but rather details based on our current knowledge,” said the President.

Zelenskyy stressed his belief that sanctions have the potential to influence Russia with regard to ceasing the conflict.

Trump's threats

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that he felt "anger" due to Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion about establishing a provisional authority in Ukraine under the United Nations' oversight.

Consequently, the United States' leader warned Russia about facing additional tariffs on oil.

Just a few days later, Fox News, citing sources, reported that Trump accused Putin of delaying ceasefire negotiations. In this context, the US is considering strengthening sanctions.

Moreover, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had earlier proposed the idea of implementing the harshest possible sanctions against Russia.
