Republican pollster Sarah Longwell believes that President Donald Trump's meticulously constructed image is starting to crumble due to his economic policies leaving many Americans struggling.
Through his tenure on 'The Apprentice,' Trump has crafted an image of himself as a savvy businessman. This perception persists among voters who might not appreciate all aspects of his character or behavior. They argue that despite their reservations about how he conducts himself personally, they believe he will reduce costs and stimulate economic growth. What we’re witnessing currently is Trump dismantling the narrative that buoyantly supports his standing with many individuals.
She pointed out that Trump has a core backing of approximately 32% of voters. These supporters would "have to be homeless before they acknowledge that Donald Trump has destroyed the economy."

However, some voters opted for Trump instead of dealing with inflation and rising costs. These are precisely the voters who are beginning to drift away from him.
"So, you’re beginning to notice folks genuinely worried because Donald Trump appears not to be prioritizing the economy,” Longwell stated. “This isn’t where his focus lies. Even supporters who back him strongly have started mentioning this issue. For instance, they might voice appreciation for what Elon Musk is achieving. While remaining hopeful overall, these individuals also convey worries regarding the possible impact of tariffs.”
These individuals simply want lower costs for products," she went on. "[If] Donald Trump increases their prices, they will quickly turn away from him.
Longwell stated this information originates from individuals she surveyed prior to the tariffs being implemented.
In a subsequent part of the discussion, Longwell informed Wallace that certain Americans will only understand the consequences after experiencing the pain for themselves, much like touching a hot stove.
What I believe is that for many voters, they won’t start feeling disenchanted with Trump until they experience direct negative impacts from his actions themselves. For instance, recently within certain circles, particularly when I appeared on your program previously, concerns around tariffs began surfacing more prominently. Economic issues play a significant role; even Dogecoin has become a point of concern for some individuals who aren't necessarily fans of Elon Musk. People often need tangible evidence—like touching a hot stove—to truly react negatively towards someone’s policies. Thus, unless these constituents face adverse effects personally, their opinions might not shift against him.
This is why she believes that tariffs will be what pops the Trump bubble.
