GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -Colorado Department of Transportation honored 64 employees who have died in the line of duty, including Trent Umberger and Nathan Jones, for Remembrance Day on Tuesday.
Their names have now been added to the memorial rock outside of CDOT’s office.
"Our maintenance teams operate daily to ensure safe travel throughout Colorado. This job is perilous yet essential. We commemorate them on Memorial Day, honoring those who did not return so that others might," stated CDOT’s Maintenance and Operations Director, Shawn Smith.
In September 2024, Umberger and Jones were struck by a vehicle while they were working alongside the road near Palisade.
As stated by CDOT, in 2024, there were 31 deaths in work zones across Colorado.
