Originating in Dublin from 1969, the initial lineup included bass guitarist, lead singer, and primary lyricist Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon; however, Wrixon left soon after they formed.

A supporter proposed: "The group’s moniker originated from a robotic figure named Tin Lizzie featured in The Dandy comic, which they modified into Thin Lizzy as a lighthearted nod to the typical Dublin dialect where 'thin' might sound like 'tin.'"

Even with all the various hypotheses, the actual source of the title came to light quite some time back. The Dandy, a British children’s comic book magazine launched initially in 1937 and continuing up until 2012, included an array of comics such as one centered around Tin Lizzie—a robotic maidservant made of metal—depicted by artist Jack Prout.
This figure, widely admired during the 1950s, appeared to make a significant impact on them. When Eric Bell was generating ideas for the band’s name in the latter part of the 1960s, he remembered an ancient comic book robot. He felt that a moniker similar to Tin Lizzie might be fitting.
It was the original guitarist Eric Bell, stated original Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey. After a practice session one evening, we tossed around some name ideas, and Eric proposed Tin Lizzie, referencing a character from the children's comic magazine 'The Dandy.'
In the end, the band adopted the name Thin Lizzy but tweaked the spelling slightly as a playful reference to their origins in Dublin, where "Thin" could be heard more like "T'in."
Paraphrased version: Downey reminisced about how they initially found the idea amusing: "That one made us laugh. However, the following day, despite our continued efforts to find an appropriate name, nothing felt suitable, which led Eric to suggest Tin Lizzie once more."
