HARRISBURG, S.D. (KELO) – Tariffs pose potential impacts that are causing uncertainty across various sectors in the U.S., including both commercial and residential construction.
The resources required for constructing new homes and shops originate from various parts of the world; however, increased duties result in greater expenses to bring these items into the country.
"Canada, we receive over 80% of our softwood used for constructing homes in our market. Maintaining current tariff levels on this wood is positive news. However, it’s not such favorable news when it comes to appliances like aluminum and copper sourced from international markets," stated Russ Pies, who serves as the market sales manager at Builders FirstSource.
Pies states that despite widespread reluctance to construct at present, he believes the pricing won't improve anytime soon.
"The longer you delay, the higher the costs will be. This is due to factors like inflation and regular price hikes," explained Pies.
Pies not only collaborates closely with construction firms but also holds a seat on the board of directors for the Home Builders Association. From this role, he gets the opportunity to converse with individuals capable of altering those duties.
"So, the NAHB advocates for us with legislators in Washington, D.C., and our local HBA also heads there each year at the start of June to voice our concerns. We plan to visit Washington to highlight how these tariffs could adversely impact growth within our sector. It’s crucial they understand that maintaining a robust economy requires a thriving housing market. Our aim is to ensure more individuals achieve homeownership and continue supporting the American Dream," stated Pies.
