Kamis, 03 April 2025, April 03, 2025

Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger has been selected as the Democratic candidate for Virginia's gubernatorial race.

As stated by the Democratic Party of Virginia, no additional candidates have come forward for this role. On Tuesday, Spanberger issued a statement following her acquisition of the Democratic nomination.

Thanks to each Virginian who has shared their perspective on the state's future since I began my campaign. Being the Democratic candidate for governor, I am eager to engage in numerous significant discussions with people throughout Virginia—within various neighborhoods and irrespective of previous voting choices—to address what matters most to them.

Virginia is my home—I was raised here, and this is where my spouse and I are bringing up our three girls. People throughout the state have shared with me what matters most to them, such as improving local schools, reducing living costs, safeguarding basic freedoms, ensuring community safety, protecting employment opportunities, boosting economic strength, and countering the turmoil from Washington that threatens Virginian lives. That's why I'm campaigning for governor—to advocate relentlessly for these concerns of everyday Virginians.

I am thankful for the backing from numerous elected representatives, local influencers, and community individuals who have endorsed me to become our upcoming Governor. Moving towards November—and during my tenure—I will strive diligently to earn the confidence of every Virginia resident and construct a more robust future for our state.

Spanberger grew up in Virginia and started her professional journey as a federal law enforcement agent with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Subsequently, she moved to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) where she served as a clandestine operations officer. In this role, she operated abroad under cover to thwart terrorist activities, curb the spread of nuclear arms, and monitor international criminal networks.

In 2018, Spanberger made history as the first Democrat since 1968 and the first female representative to be elected for Virginia's Seventh Congressional District.

The chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, Lamont Bagby, issued a statement after Spanberger's victory.

Abigail Spanberger is a dedicated advocate for Virginia, and I am honored to support a unified party backing her. Throughout the Commonwealth, she has demonstrated an ability to engage with and understand the concerns of people from every background. Virginians seek a leader who prioritizes pressing matters such as enhancing education, ensuring community safety, safeguarding local employment, and reducing expenses. Between now and November, Virginia Democrats plan to canvass more homes, conduct more outreach via telephone, and hold more discussions with fellow residents than at any time previously. We are prepared for this pivotal juncture, committed to standing up for Virginians, and eager to elect Abigail Spanberger as our upcoming Governor.
