This week's installment of "Happy Face," After Melissa (played by Annaleigh Ashford) revealed publicly that their father is the notorious serial killer Keith Jesperson (portrayed by Dennis Quaid), she reunites with her brother Shane (Philip Ettinger).
I spoke with the genuine Melissa, namely Melissa G. Moore, along with Ashford regarding the intricate relationship they share with their father and amongst themselves.
There are numerous dramatized TV series about serial killers, but these often do not depict them as parents or showcase their familial relationships," explained Moore, adding that "Happy Face" also delves into how Melissa and her family relate to the victims' families.
“I simply never felt acknowledged when watching any other programs,” stated Moore, who also serves as an executive producer for the series. “I consistently believed I was isolated with experiences possibly unrelatable to others. However, gradually, I began to understand that even though the specifics of my journey were distinct, the underlying emotions weren’t. These sentiments are universally shared.”
She remarked, "Even though we form an unusual and peculiar family unit, we share common challenges similar to those faced within typical families. For instance, my family grapples with developing distinct approaches to parenting, aiming to do better than what we experienced ourselves. This sentiment feels universally relatable."
Ashford said that her decision for her character to disclose the truth regarding her father was akin to "a bomb detonating," an event that had repercussions for all those associated with her.
When someone you cherish deeply, the very person who brought you into this world, cared for you, shielded you, nurtured you, and shaped your identity—what do you do with those feelings of love and memories of that individual once they transform into something monstrous? She mentioned how every family connected to these offenders grapples with questions like, 'Why didn’t I see it coming?' and ‘What might I have prevented?’
Melissa is astonished to discover that, contrary to herself, Shane—a firefighter living as a loner—has maintained consistent communication with Keith. In Episode 4, they grapple with this issue side by side. Throughout your life, you constantly question whether you might have prevented certain events and safeguarded others. This aspect isn’t commonly portrayed in true-crime series; typically, these shows concentrate heavily on the criminal rather than paying sufficient attention to the victims, their families, and even the family of the person responsible.
Ashford commented, "The story revolves around Melissa's mother and her brother and sister as they deal with this situation within their close-knit family unit. However, it also spans across generations. It’s a dramatic issue that impacts not only these individuals but also future generations and the families connected to the victims."
