On Friday, April 4th, British comedian and actor Russell Brand was charged with multiple counts Regarding allegations of sexual assault by the UK Metropolitan Police, Brand maintains his dedication to Christianity. Despite these accusations, he remains connected with the MAGA movement in the U.S.

In a a biting piece released on April fifth Salon’s Amanda Marcotte contends that the MAGA movement and extreme right-wing evangelical groups remain unaware of the “alarming” accusations currently surrounding Brand.

The collaboration involving The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4, carried out over several years, resulted in extensively detailed accusations of rape and various forms of sexual misconduct. Marcotte explains They consulted numerous sources, including four complainants. They gathered medical reports, messages, emails, and internal company papers that depicted a recurring pattern of alleged sexual misconduct, which was frequently alarming due to its brutality. Marcotte continues Soon after, Brand was removed from YouTube. He quickly transitioned to joining the MAGA-aligned platform called Rumble. Over the following several months, he relocated to the United States and underwent baptism, completely transforming into a right-wing Christian influencer. Throughout this period, there didn’t appear to be even an instant of suspicion among Brand’s newfound MAGA followers about potential hidden agendas. Instead, his supporters promoted the idea that he was a victim of political imprisonment with the allegations being part of ‘political persecution,’ as Charlie Kirk pointed out.

Brand, according to Marcotte highlights the risks associated with "MAGA Christianity" and demonstrates "the readiness, during Donald Trump's tenure, for far-right Christians to descend to the deepest depths."

"Christianity emphasizes redemption, making it an attractive framework for a celebrity needing to rehab a bad image," Marcotte observes In principle, though, there should be remorse prior to redemption. Yet, we find ourselves in an age of Trumpian Christianity, making the step where one expresses regret non-essential.

Marcotte adds After all, Trump is seen not merely as a co-religionist within the Religious Right but more akin to a messianic figure... Bullying behavior is celebrated within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. Within this version of MAGA Christianity, genuine remorse would likely be disregarded as 'woke' ideology. It’s no surprise then that someone like Russell Brand found his niche here.
