Critics of President Donald Trump and tycoon Elon Musk are organizing protests throughout the country.
The protests scheduled for Saturday aim to demonstrate opposition to the policies of the US administration regarding reductions in government size, economic matters, human rights, and various other concerns.
Over 1,200 Hands Off! protests have been organized by over 150 groups, encompassing civil rights organizations, labor unions, LGBTQ+ supporters, veteran associations, and proponents of fair elections.
The demonstrations are scheduled to take place at the National Mall in Washington D.C., various state capitals, and multiple sites across all 50 states.
President Trump has advocated for his policies by stating they are in the best interests of the United States.
Activists are criticizing the Trump administration’s actions to dismiss numerous government employees, shut down Social Security Administration branch locations, essentially close whole departments, expel immigrants, reduce safeguards for transgender individuals, and decrease federal support for healthcare initiatives.
Mr. Musk, an advisor to the President who also owns Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, has taken a significant part in reducing government size as the leader of the recently established Department of Government Efficiency.
He claims he is saving billions of dollars for the taxpayers.
At the Washington rally, Paul Osadebe—a lawyer with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as a union representative—condemned Mr. Trump, Mr. Musk, and other members of the administration. He argued they fail to appreciate the efforts of federal workers who establish "a foundation of financial stability and strength for those employed."
He stated: "Billionaires and oligarchs place importance only on profits and control, and they certainly do not care about you, your existence, or your neighborhood."
And we're noticing that they are willing to demolish anyone or harm whoever stands in their way to achieve their goals.
In Massachusetts, crowds of thousands assembled at Boston Common carrying placards with messages such as: "Protect our democracy"; "Defend our Social Security"; and: "Diversity, equity, inclusion strengthen America. Stay away!"
When questioned regarding the protests, the White House issued a statement indicating that "President Trump’s stance is unequivocal: he remains committed to safeguarding Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for those who qualify as beneficiaries."
Similarly, the Democrats' position supports providing Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to undocumented immigrants, potentially leading these programs to financial ruin and placing American senior citizens under severe strain.
Protesters have organized national rallies against either Mr. Trump or Mr. Musk several occasions ever since the new government assumed office.
However, the opposition movement hasn't yet generated a large-scale mobilization akin to the Women’s March in 2017, where thousands of women gathered in Washington, D.C., following President Trump’s initial inauguration. Similarly, it hasn’t matched the scale of the Black Lives Matter protests that swept across numerous cities in response to George Floyd’s death in 2020.
The organizers believe that the protests planned for Saturday may become the biggest since President Trump resumed his term in January.
