Police Warn of Toy Guns Mistaken as Real Weapons: "These Can Be Altered"

CHESTER, Pa. - Parents have likely witnessed the 'Orbeez' toy guns.

The issue arises when these imitation firearms closely resemble actual weapons, prompting authorities in Chester to prioritize safety and prevent any potential injuries.

The Chester Police Department is exploring legal solutions due to an increasing potential hazard posed by individuals using painted black Orbeez toy guns, which have been gaining popularity on platforms like Amazon and various retail websites.

When painted black, the toy gun that shoots water beads or gel pellets can look like a real gun, the potential danger played out last week when a witness called 911 to report an armed carjacking and shooting in Chester.

"Captain William Carey from the Chester City Police noted that we’re beginning to witness children roaming the streets with these firearms, which can be modified. By removing the orange tip at the front and painting it black, they resemble actual guns," he stated.

"The scene involved siblings and buddies enjoying themselves with those Orbeez blasters, appearing as though they were hijacking someone’s vehicle," Carey elaborated.

"As you can imagine, this scenario might unfold. Whether you rush into a shop, head to your college campus, or go to the local park, someone with a legal concealed carry permit may perceive this as a threatening situation and interpret it wrongly. We aim to avoid such an unnecessary disaster," Carey explained further.

One person among those accused of participating in the weekend disturbances at Temple University’s campus was found with an Orbeez gun.

The Temple Police mention that they have been confiscating multiple of these recently.

"There has been a significant increase in sightings lately. These are water pellet guns designed to look like actual firearms; however, being hit with one up close could result in harm. Additionally, there’s always the risk that someone might confuse these toys for genuine weapons, which could lead to serious consequences involving law enforcement officers or civilians carrying arms,” stated Captain Michael Henigan from the Temple University Police Department.

"We’re going to begin taking action against them. We’re awaiting further legal advice on what actions we can and cannot take," Carey said.

"We aim to avoid any senseless tragedies. Please inspect your children’s bedrooms and their backpacks. Should you find these items and notice any alterations, kindly take them away," Carey implored.
