On Friday, the Prince Edward Island legislature saw further questioning regarding the expenses tied to the province’s agreement with the National Hockey League. Opposition Leader Hal Perry criticized certain “exorbitantly costly events” that took place as part of this arrangement.
Perry submitted invoices for events organized by the ruling Progressive Conservatives in New York during 2023 in preparation for signing a contract This resulted in the Island being labeled as the NHL's official travel destination.
The expenses included payments to consultants, as well as costs for entertainment, food service, and renting a photo booth — totaling over $100,000 from Prince Edward Islanders’ tax contributions.
"Perry questioned Tourism Minister Zack Bell during question period about the benefits we gained from these extremely costly events in New York," he said.
The agreement with the league indicates that the province will cover direct expenses ranging from $7.5 million to $8.4 million to the NHL throughout a three-year period in return for utilizing the league’s marketing resources.
