The former US president , aged 63, admitted this during a discussion with Hamilton College President Steven TePPER on Thursday. He mentioned that being president for eight years had strained their relationship, so he has been putting effort into planning enjoyable activities with Michelle to compensate.
He stated, "My relationship with my wife was suffering due to a significant imbalance. To try and mend this rift, I've made an effort to engage in enjoyable activities from time to time." In a 2023 interview on CBS Mornings, he stated, "I will simply put it like this: Being away from the White House definitely makes it easier to spend more time together with her." The ex-first lady also opened up about their difficulties in 2022 during a conversation with Revolt TV, saying, "For ten years, I was unable to tolerate my spouse."
Back then, Michelle stated “Marriage doesn’t always split down the middle – never, never.” She went on to clarify, “Sometimes I’m putting in 70%, and he’s contributing 30%. Other times, he brings 60% and I bring 40%. In 1998, they embraced their eldest child, Malia, followed by their younger daughter Sasha in 2001. From 2009 to 2017, these two siblings spent their childhood years at the White House after relocating to Washington D.C., as Barack’s election victory led them into the presidential residence.
Back then, during his campaign, Barack stated he was "completely convinced, since we have discussed this, that [Malia and Sasha] are not anticipating the move" or about "having to form new friendships." In 2008, he shared with People magazine: "I am positive that they feel relieved knowing that they might not miss us too much if everything doesn’t go as planned."
However, in 2011, Michelle mentioned that Malia and Sasha — who went to the private Sidwell Friends School until graduating from high school — were doing well when she stated, “They’re healthy, they’re flourishing.
