ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The state budget remains delayed for yet another day. Legislators have approved an additional extension to ensure that workers receive their paychecks during this period. This new budget extension will last through Monday, keeping state functions operational in the meantime.
Out of over $2 billion allocated through the extender, part of this funds will be used to support New York National Guard members who are addressing staffing gaps in the state’s prisons.
“Around $38 million is allocated to fund National Guard members serving as temporary corrections officers in our prisons amid the current turmoil,” stated Senator Thomas O'Mara.
It is reported that the governor has suggested reducing the minimum age for corrections officers to 18 years old from the current 21, though this proposal remains under discussion.
Other priorities for the governor include changing the states discovery law, mask limitations, and involuntary commitment. Negotiations are still taking place.
Some lawmakers say they would like to see the budget done before the scheduled two week break in the legislative session.
“I hope it’s finished by next week since we’re heading into the following weekend—the start of Passover, an important religious observance, followed immediately by Easter,” explained O'Mara. “This overlap will cause some disruptions.”
Governor Hochul stated that she cannot provide a timeline for when it will be completed.
“I have all the time in the world,” Hochul stated. “Honestly, I am completely patient. I’ll remain here until we secure a budget that I think benefits New Yorkers.”
