Many individuals convened through hymns and prayers to pay tribute to and commemorate the life and heritage of Pope Francis Wednesday evening at a mass led by Boston Archbishop Richard Henning .
The Mass held at Saint Teresa of Avila in West Roxbury was part of a scheduled trilogy of services in the region over the coming days. Despite being thousands of miles apart, the passing of Pope Francis resonated deeply within our local community.
Honoring Pope Francis
Coming together as Catholics to pay our respects to the Pope is crucial," stated Peter Martin, emphasizing his presence at the ceremony on Wednesday evening. "Being part of this community and praying for him means a lot. It would be wonderful to have a pontiff who carries forward Pope Francis’ focus on aiding the underprivileged and marginalized.
Following the Pope’s passing, discussions surrounding his legacy have surged. Members of the congregation highlighted Francis’ compassion as what remains most memorable.
“He was one of us,” stated Mike O’Connor. “Like a pope for everyday folks. It’s really quite straightforward; he was just an ordinary person.”

Archbishop heading to Rome
Henning led the service mere hours before his planned departure to Rome for Pope Francis's funeral at the Vatican City on Saturday.
“I wish to carry the people of Boston in my heart and join them in prayer,” stated Henning. “This is undoubtedly a historical moment. The Pope’s impact on both the church and the world has been truly immense.”
Two additional services are planned to pay tribute to Pope Francis. The first will take place in Lowell on Thursday, followed by a Mass in Stoughton on Friday.
