As she recounted in her book "I Am Maria" (as reported by People), "My heart was heavy with sorrow and my mind tormented by waves of confusion, rage, dread, melancholy, and unease. My sense of self and place crumbled; honestly, it was excruciating, leaving me petrified." This pain hit particularly hard since during their marriage, her professional roles often revolved around his position. Upon separation, Shriver had to relinquish her role as the First Lady of California.
